2% of Spotify listeners buy 50% of concert tickets

Spotify dropped some stats and advice on nurturing streaming Super Listeners last week. With the data comes a surprising takeaway on the importance of an artist’s most active fans, particularly when it comes to selling tickets to live shows.

Spotify defines super listeners as those who have intentionally sought out the music from active sources like the artist profile, release pages, their saved libraries, and more in the past 28 days.

Key Super Listener takeaways from Spotify:

  • Many Spotify listeners buy concert tickets
  • Super Listeners make up just 2% of an artist’s monthly listeners
    • but they drive over 18% of monthly streams
    • one super listener streams as much as 20 listeners in an artist’s programmed audience
  • Super Listeners account for 50% of an artist’s ticket sales via Spotify
    • in a recent survey, super listeners reported spending over $25 per touring artist on merch, live shows, and more in the past 30 days

It’s a staggering stat:

2% of an artist’s Spotify listeners account for 50% of an artist’s ticket sales via Spotify

But currently Spotify offers artists no way to connect with that 2% most likely to buy tickets.

The stat also suggests Spotify – while still worthwhile in many levels – may not be the best place to spend time and money if the objective is to sell more tickets.

Social media offers an alternative, but Bandsintown is the clear winner when it comes to show promotion..

Not only does Bandsintown and its free Bandsintown For Artists platform make sure that an artists tour dates are listed on Spotify and other platforms, it enables them to communicate directly with all the fans following them their at no cost.
