Despite the recent warning that new US import tariffs would affect the cost of shipping physical music media such as CDs, vinyl records, and cassettes, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) confirmed that these items are still currently exempt.

CDs, Vinyl Records, Cassettes Safe From New US Import Tariffs

In a key clarification following sweeping changes to United States import policy, the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has confirmed that physical music formats such as vinyl records, CDs, and cassettes remain exempt from the newly imposed tariffs that took effect on August 29th, 2025.

These items have been protected as “informational materials” under 50 U.S.C. § 1702(b), despite the suspension of the popular “de minimis” rule that previously allowed low-value imports (under $800) to enter duty-free. The expiration of the de minimis exemption — formerly one of the highest thresholds globally — was part of the Trump administration’s broader strategy to curb illicit trade, including counterfeit goods and narcotics increasingly being shipped in low-value parcels.

Platforms like Discogs have reassured users that “music and informational media have always been exempt from tariffs and continue to be so at this time” while cautioning that implementation may vary with customs officials and shipping services. Bandcamp has also provided tools to avoid logistical complications, including shipping restrictions to the US and guidance on using accurate Harmonized System (HS) codes.

For music sellers and independent artists, this exemption offers a reprieve, although some elements of music media sales will still be affected. For example, other artistic merchandise and goods that are shipped to the United States are subject to the new tariffs (t-shirts, hoodies, hats, totes, etc.).

Hence, uncertainty still lingers. Observers warn that misclassification or inconsistent enforcement might lead to unexpected charges. The change also highlights the fragility of physical merchandise trade and the importance of clarity in shipping documentation.
