German police have built a Shazam-like smartphone app that helps them identify hate filled rock songs being used as a recruiting and motivational tool by neo-Nazi and other far-right organizers. Music is seen as a "gateway drug" by German authorities. Dubbed the "Nazi Shazam", the app may to be adopted throughout the country after an introductory meeting this week.
A number of legal hurdles need to be addressed, according to Der Speigal. Lawyers must determine whether the automatic id of music being played in a public place would constitute acoustic surveillance.
