2014 is already shaping up to be a pivotal year for Gracenote. Sony is selling the music data provider to the Tribune Media in a deal that creates a massive database of music, entertainment and media data. And later today thecompany is launching Gracenote Rhythm, a music recommendations API aimed squarely at a market dominated by The Echo Nest.

It's too early to know exactly how Gracenote Rythym compares to The Echo Nest, but the combination of music and media data alongside data driven music recommendations could prove a powerful selling tool.

“The music industry has seen a lot of music services come and go with the exact same Internet Radio solutions that rely heavily on Web-scraped and auto-generated content. We’d like to see some real innovation in the market,” Gracenote president Stephen White told Music Ally. “At Gracenote, we believe there has to be a human component to creating and delivering Internet Radio – technology can’t do it alone.”
