Gwen Stefani is windowing the release of her new album "This Is What The Truth Feels Like." The album will become available on Spotify and other music streaming services on April 1st, two weeks after its physical release.
"It sucks that we’re in a place where, y’know, the value of what you do is less now,” Stefani explained in a LinkedIn in a video interview. "Part of me is going to stand here and be like, ‘Pay me the money! I made the music! This is my job! This is my gift! I need to get some kind of compensation because I have to live.”
Stefani's short term windowing is a departure to from the Adele and Taylor Swift strategy of keeping new releases off of streaming indefinitely. Most recently, The 1975 and Coldplay held their new releases off Spotify for just a week. Several label representatives involved in windowed releases tell Hypebot off the record that, thus far, there it no firm proof that that a staggered release does or does not help to boost sales.
