This year, the festival's lineup of 200+ bands and artists will include: the previously announced guest curator, clipping., English chamber folk ensemble Black Country, New Road, revered Canadian pop artist HOMESHAKE, LA synth punks Sextile, fuzzy indie rock outfit feeble little horse, outlandish punkers Snõõper, post-punk duo Sweeping Promises, ambient pioneer Laraaji, and Nigerian desert rock band Etran de L’Aïr.

It's a lineup that explodes off the page with creativity and innovation. Each year, Sled Island's guest curator helps to shape the festival's programming, and some of the invited artists by clipping. include: billy woods, Backxwash, Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe, Lana Del Rabies and Granpa (Lucas Abela).
But Calgary's own homegrown talent shines brightly too. The festival will also feature: Calgary hip-hip heroes Cartel Madras, queer cathartic post-rockers Jed Arbour, free jazz saxophonist Jairus Sharif, improvising art-school dropouts Dial Up, conscious rapper KTheChosen, riot grrrl up-and-comers Rebel Grrrlz, and so many more.

With such a courageous curatorial announcement featuring artists from all over Canada and all over the world, yet a distinct care given to local artists from Calgary and elsewhere in Alberta, we wanted to learn just how Sled Island is able to find space for all of this under one roof. And why it's important to prioritize that work.
We chatted with Festival Manager Tyra Sanderson to find out:
Hypebot: Why is hyper-locality important for ambitious music festivals like Sled Island?
Tyra: "Both a champion of local talent and a strong supporter of Calgary's arts and culture sector, we believe that local representation at Sled Island is an important aspect of all our programming. We operate the festival as multi-venue throughout Calgary's downtown core in an effort to support local institutions and businesses."
This model allows us to expose Calgary, as well as our broader out-of-town audiences, to the small but mighty businesses in Calgary's inner city that support the arts all year long."
Our programming also features a large focus on emerging talent from Calgary. We want to build and uplift Calgary's music scene by giving local artists the opportunity to network and play with bands from all over the world, as well as show attendees that Calgary's underground is worth investing time, energy and money into."
H: What is the process like, for sourcing local talent?
T: "Our process for accepting artists involves a diverse listening committee made up of festival staff, musicians, community members, and industry professionals that assess submissions for quality as well as fit with the festival’s vision and schedule."
On top of contracted headliners, we receive over 1,000 submissions every year, and we give all artists the same opportunity to submit and be reviewed by our team. We do try to prioritize a certain number of local bands within that process in order to ensure we have adequate representation."
"We want people to walk away from Sled feeling like they experienced something they wouldn't have the chance to see at another festival."
H: Do most music festivals incentivize and elevate creativity in your mind? And what does that mean for you?
T: "We believe that all music festivals encourage engagement with art and creativity from both artists and audience members. Our music festival is unique because we foster a space specifically for creativity. We are more concerned with exposing our audiences to new experiences and expanding what their understanding is of music and art performance, rather than programming what's popular."

H: What is the work behind prioritizing diversity and representation
T: "Diversity and representation is something that we keep in mind for every aspect of our festival. We have worked hard to develop strong safer spaces and diversity policies and this is a guiding principle in all our governing and operational activities."
