Guitar Hero Grabs Smashing Pumpkins Single

The Smashing Pumpkins will debut their new single "G.L.O.W." exclusively within the Guitar Hero game. It  will be released publicly later. The track, bundled with two Pumpkins hits, "1979" and "The Everlasting Guitar_hero_2
Gaze," will be available as a three-song downloaded content pack. Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan will also appear as an in-game character.

Using games to debut, promote and even sell music is becoming an increasingly important outlet for musicians that appeal to the gaming demographic.  Thus far, however, in-
game opportunities for developing and indie artists have been far more limited.

I’d love to hear your experiences – good and bad – with music and gaming and to share them with Hypebot’s readers.

  1. Back in the days of Nintendo, I used to mute the TV volume and put Harry Nilsson on the stereo.
Since the likelihood of me encountering Guitar Hero is practically zero, I’m kind of annoyed that these bands are debuting new music via video games. And since it’s becoming much more popular (aka lucratic) to do so, I’m guessing that fewer and fewer indie groups will benefit…

  2. Sorry, but I disagree. I’m super-excited to see older bands experimenting with the recent surge in music-related video games. I think the cross-generational appeal of games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band are great new forms of distribution for bands, both old and new.
I am curious, however, if this model can replicate into new music discovery or if Guitar Hero and related games can be distribution channels for independent musicians.

  3. I’m blogging and hearing it all within ear-shot and I could not help but say what fu#king elitist are these Smashed Pumpkins.
Aside from framing their audience, and thus gaining a limited effect, why should it be that they should be ordained to grab-bag on the success of GHero? Like my young nephew is gonna be connecting the Pumpkins with Hero. What a buzzkill.
They should “give” to the undiscovered and more fitting sounds of todays bands as opposed to the stale sound of the Ol’ Pumpkins. I’d be into that>
I heard a TV ad where they used a Tom Pettty song and I was like ” screw that…not interested. Crap.” It was for The Office, and the ad lost me. I wont be watching that show. The point being: Oldies, like The Pumpkins, are dead.
Thus, let us sell new media with new, undiscovered music. Plus, Oldies’ acts, by in large, will no longer pay the bills (willingly.)
In short, the Pumpkins need money like the world needs a hole in it’s head. NEXT!!
