‘Fuck Freemium’. Devo Drummer Josh Freese Strikes Again With $75,000 Fan Offering

image from joshfreese.com (UPDATED) Devo and session drummer Josh Freese got a lot ink in 2009 for his tongue in cheek yet effective fan  packages and outspoken take on the music industry is back at it with new offerings that start at $5.000 and top out at $7500 for for his latest release, My New Friends. For $75,000, one fan gets:

  • Josh to join their band for a month (or becomes your personal assistant)
  • They can take home one of Josh's drum sets
  • Josh writes and records a 5 song EP entirely about them
  • Take Shrooms and cruise Hollywood in Danny from TOOL's Lamborghini.
  • 500 copies of "My New Friends" (start your own online CD store…specializing in just this one CD)
  • Go get matching outfits at Tommy Bahama's and make everybody very sad.

“My biggest hope and fear is that someone buys the 75K one and [I'll] have to go join some guy’s band for a month, write a whole record about him, take shrooms with him and cruise Danny Carey’s Lamborghini, etc.,” Freese told Wired.com. “Worst of all we have to go get matching Tommy Bahamas outfits. I doubt that one sells though…. Thank god.”

  1. Gosh, I really do hate to do this.
But does Hypebot not have access to a spell-checker?
As good as this site is, and as much as I depend on it for a resource, it’s just hard to take HB seriously when the spelling is (1) so consistently wrong and (2) is so easy to fix before going live with a post.

  2. Note to Josh:
Don’t be too thankful yet. I did a kickstarter project to pay for my new album (coming out in about a month-ish) I put up a $1’000 offering, not thinking anyone would take it because I’m not well know yet. Someone did! So I am going to their house down in California to play in their living room, giving them “executive producer” credit on the album, and my wife is knitting them iPhone Cozies. I am very happy they did though, and that I didn’t offer a “Shrooms” package.

  3. Wow. I think I’ll try that with my band. I guess it doesn’t hurt to go for the outrageous. Worst case, you get a chuckle. Best case, you get some money!
Yeah, I don’t think Josh will mind too much if he gets $75k. He probably already has hook-ups for free shrooms!

  4. Hmmm, I’m surprised he hasn’t gotten arrested for the shrooms thing!
I would be thrilled though if I could sell a package like that. I’m surprised some millionaire/billionaire Devo fan has yet to stand up. 🙂

  5. Is there no standard for grammar and spelling on this great site???
    Rough morning is your excuse???
Rather than evolving into a tighter and more professional platform, this site proves more and more frustrating and amateurish for those of us who appreciate the intelligent information, but cannot abide the complete lack of attention to the correct use of the English language.
This is a sentence?? how much is 5.000, and what is for for, not to mention.. oh forget it.
