image from blogs.wfmt.com[UPDATED] Kickstarter is getting serious about music crowdfunding with the hiring of a music industry insider as their first ever Head of Music. It's a move that means increased competition for PledgeMusic, Patreon and a handful of others.

Molly Neuman, interim president of the American Association of Independent Music (A2IM),  will join Kickstarter as the crowdfunding site's first-ever Head of Music. Neuman was one of the founding figures of the Riot grrrl movement, a drummer for Bratmobile, The Frumpies, the PeeChees, and ran her own record label, before taking the post at A2IM.

While clearly ramping up its presence in music crowdfunding, Kickstarter has always been a big player in the space.  This year Kickstarter funded projects were nominated for four Grammys – TLC, De La Soul, John Vanderslice, and Meow the Jewels.

"I'm so excited to join the Kickstarter team, and to help musicians and everyone in the music ecosystem look at new ways of connecting with the community that wants to help bring their creativity to life," said Molly Neuman. "As a label founder, advisor, and artist herself, Molly has been at the forefront of independent creative expression and artist advocacy throughout her career," said Kendel Shore, VP of Communities at Kickstarter. "We're thrilled for Molly to join Kickstarter, and lead one of our largest communities of creators further into the future of music."
