Spotify becomes ‘official’ way to share music, podcasts on Facebook

Facebook will launch a Spotify-driven audio player next week as part of a major push into audio announced by CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Dubbed internally “Project Boombox,” the player will provide access to both music and podcasts from Sptoiffy directly within the Facebook app making it much easier for fans and artists to share content on the platform.

It’s not hard to imagine Facebook adding other music services to the player, but for now, Spotify is the only music service baked into Facebook.

“Our ambition has always been to make Spotify ubiquitous across platforms and devices – bringing music and podcasts to more people – and our new integration with Facebook is another step in these efforts,” Spotify said in a statement to Variety.

The Spotify player has already been tested in non-U.S. markets, including Mexico and Thailand. It’s unclear how the player might also be integrated within Instagram and other Facebook-owned apps.

Podcasts, Clubhouse clone & more

Facebook recently added audio short messaging app Soundbites and is going after Clubhouse with an app of its own.

Facebook says it will also add the ability to stream podcasts natively within the app. 170 million Facebook users already follow hundreds of thousands of podcasts on the platform and 35 million are members of podcast fan groups.

“We think that audio is going to be a first-class medium and that there are all these different products to be built across this whole spectrum,” said CEO Mark Zuckerberg. “Of course, it includes some areas that, that have been, you know, popular recently like podcasting and kind of live audio rooms like this, but I also think that there’s some interesting things that are under-explored in the area overall.”
