8 beginner songwriter mistakes, how to fix them

Everyone has to start somewhere, and while it takes time to become a good songwriter, fixing these common mistakes can help expedite that process, and put you on the road to writing A-list material that much sooner.

In this latest piece from MusicThinkTank, contibutor Shaun Letang shares eight mistakes beginner songwriters make all to frequently, and what you can do to fix/avoid them.

“Whether it’s alliteration, foreshadowing or rhyming, we all learn a basic set of literary devices through the education system (i.e. English class). New songwriters often begin by trying to rhyme every lyric. It’s almost like they’re trying to write a rap song, even if they aren’t. Now, rhyming can be quite powerful. And it’s a useful device. But when you force a rhyme, you can end up writing songs that sound cliché or like you were trying too hard.”
