Create weird, wonderful personalized playlists with Spotify Niche Mixes

[UPDATED] Spotify has expanded its family of personalized playlists with Niche Mixes – an almost unlimited array of weirdly specific personalized playlists.

The streamer also reconfigured its mix categories with clearer names that evolve with the user: artist mix, genre mix, and decade mix.

Spotify will drop a few new personalized Niche Mixes into each user’s For You section every day, or they can type a few descriptive words into the Search box at the top of the app followed by the word “mix,” and get a custom playlist based on those descriptors and their listening habits.

Here is my own Niche Mixes generated “DIY Music Mix” which did a pretty good job of featuring artists and songs that embody the DIY ethos.

“Spotify Mixes were inspired by Daily Mix, our most popular personalized playlist among users,” said the streamer. “And since personalization is our thing, we’re always iterating and improving our products in order to provide the best possible audio experience for our listeners.”

More from Spotify on how Niche Mixes work

  • “Navigate to the Made For You hub located in Search to find a carousel of 5-10 suggested Niche Mixes made for you, updated every day.
  • You can explore tens of thousands of Niche Mixes within Search. Simply search for an activity, vibe, instrument or aesthetic plus the word “Mix.”
  • Looking for something different, on trend or out of the box? Or, search for a playlist to fit the occasion and check out Mixes like Cottagecore Indie Mix, Bubblegum Pop Mix, Discofox Mix and so many more.
  • Or if you’re getting ready to take a trip with friends or family this Spring Break, check out Feel Good Driving Mix, Fun Road Trip Mix, Travel Mashup Mix, and more.”
