Messaging App LINE Acquires MixRadio

Ultra popular Snapchat has been clear about its broad music ambitions.  Now competitor LINE jumps into music with the acquisition of personalized online streaming music service MixRadio.

Nokia's free personal streaming music service MixRadio has been acquired by LINE Corporation, owner and of the free call and messaging app. MixRadio offers a mobile-optimized and personalized music streaming service in 31 countries.

Details of the deal were not disclosed. LINE says will support MixRadio’s development and expansion.

With 181 million monthly active users in 230 countries and regions, LINE, like other messaging apps, wants to expand the range of services it offers. For Snapchat and now LINE, music and entertainment is often first on the new features list.

The team that developed MixRadio including the newly released recommendation engine, along with the MixRadio leadership team will join the new company, but continue to be headquartered in Bristol, United Kingdom.
