Music marketing isn't always... fun.
In fact, most of the industry is moving so hard towards data-driven micro-targeting to find fans when they're scrolling on social media, the idea that the industry thinks of its consumer base primarily as data points to be manipulated by pixels is frankly, offensive.
But every now and then, a fun, messy, IRL marketing campaign comes along that brings people together in a public space to benefit everyone involved and point fans towards a live concert event. And it reminds us of the most magical thing about music itself — especially live music — which is that it connects people.
To that end, we were delighted when we read about how last October, Country Rap star, BigXThaPlug, made his Nashville fans scour the city in search of wads of cash, tickets to his concert that night, and bars of soap, as well as a participation consolation prize invite to a meet-n-greet.
What could be better than running around outdoors in a park all day, then going out to a crazy fun show at night?

This scavenger hunt was organized in partnership with PassPass, a platform founded by former music executive and musician Edge Groves, that organizes "viral giveaways" for all kinds of entertainers across 22 cities. In the same way that Hypebot believes that "life is a stage," the tagline for PassPass is:
"Life is a game. Go play!"
In the case of BigXThaPlug's city-wide fan excursion, it was a total success. The activation quickly spilled onto social media, generating 5 million total plays, hundreds of fan-created Instagram Reels, and a trending audio track built around the campaign.
Turning real-world, exclusive participation into shareable moments online and exciting, creative adventures is just about the best thing an artist can offer their fans in today's super digital interaction environment. Campaigns like these get both the industry and audiences talking.
