On this week's Music Biz Weekly podcast, Blasko and Michael dig into two essential practices that every band should implement, but too often overlook.
Blasko shared the critical importance of authentic artistic expression, arguing that independent artists must genuinely connect with their unique experiences rather than relying on familiar topics. You risk becoming forgettable when you don't share your own authentic perspective.
Both discussed how authenticity applies to artists at every career stage, from new artists working to attract their first fans to established veterans who risk losing connection with their audience by singing about topics that no longer reflect their current reality.
Michael focused on the fundamental need for ongoing fan base retention and growth. He stresses that artists must actively ask followers to subscribe, follow, and engage across multiple platforms, instead of assuming that fans will find them organically. If not, your number of active followers will naturally decrease over time.
The pair also highlighted how fan metrics are now currency in the music business, with booking agents and other industry pros primarily evaluating artists based on their visible social media engagement and follower counts.
