Musicians and marketers are constantly told that consistency is the key to social media success. But new research suggests that repeating the same promotional messages might actually be killing reach.
According to a new study published in the Journal of Marketing, you can drastically increase audience engagement by varying their topics and wording as long as you maintain a consistent "psychological voice."
Conducted by Christian Hughes at Case Western Reserve University and Jillian Hmurovic of Penn State University, the research analyzed more than 17,000 tweets. While the analyzed data focused on politics, the study explicitly noted that the lessons apply directly to influencers, musicians, and all brands building a public profile.
The Science of Social Media Engagement
The researchers examined three specific dimensions of consistency: the topics discussed, the meaning conveyed, and the psychological qualities expressed in the language.
The data revealed what drives and destroys online engagement:
- Varying your topics increases engagement by 70%: Accounts that discussed a wider variety of subjects than usual saw a massive spike in retweets. Broadening your subject matter casts a wider net and keeps followers interested.
- Diversifying your vocabulary increases engagement by 33%: Using fresh, varied language to express ideas resulted in one-third more shares.
- Reducing psychological consistency decreases engagement by 20%: This is the critical catch. While audiences want fresh topics, they demand a recognizable persona. If an account's underlying psychological markers - such as patterns of positivity, expressions of power, or focus on the past versus the future - fluctuated, engagement dropped significantly.
The AI Homogenization Trap
These findings are particularly urgent as the industry leans heavily into artificial intelligence for content creation and marketing copy. Over-relying on generative tools can strip away the psychological markers that make an artist or brand's voice unique.
“AI is being used so much—and the risk is that everything starts to sound the same,” Hughes noted. “You have to try to craft the type of message that’s right for your audience. The advice is that you need to be consistent. We found that it’s a little more nuanced. It’s being intentional when you’re being inconsistent.”

Hypebot’s Bottom Line
The era of hammering the same promotional message across your social channels is over.
Fans and followers want a multi-dimensional voice that speaks about a variety of topics using fresh language. However, the core of who you are - attitude, perspective, and personality - must remain unmistakably yours.
Embrace topic variety to cast a wider net, but fiercely protect your authentic voice to keep the current audience hooked.
