In the first example we’ve seen of a band using podcasts to reach out to their fans, Umphrey’s McGee is offer free twice monthly podcasts of 70-80 minutes of live music on the web site. This kind of smart use of affordable technologies has helped propel Umphrey’s to elite status in the world of jam bands. Some have dubbed them the likely successor to the now defunct Phish although certainly former Phish leader singer Trey Anastasio’s own band and String Cheese Incident are also competing for the same fans. The band claims 4000 podcast downloads each for the first two installments.
