The StreamIt was only a matter of time before TV talent competitions joined forces with streaming music.  That's the premise behind the open talent competition "The Stream," and Spotify along with all 3 major labels have signed on.

Billed as a next-generation music talent competition, The Stream will use plays on Spotify to determine which act deserve a deal with the world's three largest record labels. Here's the pitch: "The world’s leading record companies Universal, Sony, and Warner Music, together with Spotify – are all working together on The Stream to find the next big artist."  Nordic World AS   The StreamWhen it launches, musicians will be encouraged to upload performance videos on to The Stream website "where it instantly becomes available to the public eye." The artist and their fans are encourage to spread the word, with the 100 most streamed invited to a showcase for Universal, Sony and Warner Music. The labels will choose 40 artists and work with them for a week. At the end of that week, each label will sign three artists.From Spotify To Live TVSpotify newThose 9 acts will then compete on a live TV show and the music will be available on Spotify. The most streamed artists stay in the competition, and the least streamed artist "risks eviction." "It’s up to the audience which artists stay in the competition, and which ones have to leave, based on the number of streams as well as traditional voting during the live shows," says Nordic World, the show's producers. View a trailer here.
