YouTube is copying one of Twitch’s most popular features Clips in an extensive new test.

YouTube Clips is currently available alongside select channels and videos on desktop and Android devices, with iOS devices coming soon.

Clips on YouTube allows user to select a 5-60 second segment of both video uploads and streams that can be shared with others across platforms. Channels in this experiment show a clip icon under the video that will allow users to select the portion of the video that they want to clip. The clip will be played on the original video and loop repeatedly.

Do Labels, Artists Want Clips?

Twitch has been criticized by labels because “clips” constitute an unauthorized recording.  On YouTube, the underlying video is covered by YouTube’s blanket license, which for most content Twitch lacks.

Whether or not most artists even want random clips of their livestreams or videos shared remains unclear.
