Learn how TikTok streaming royalties work

If you’re uploading your music on TikTok, you should find out how you will get paid. Our friends at Symphonic explain and how they and many other music distributors can help.

A guest post by Randi Zimmerman of Symphonic Blog.

Making sure you are collecting all the royalties owed to you across all platforms is an essential part of being an artist. On TikTok, it’s no different. Most distributors have deals in place with TikTok to make sure you get paid for your work, and that includes us! Here’s everything you need to know…

How does it work?

While most DSPs pay creators based on the number of streams or views, TikTok has a very different model. TikTok pays royalties based on the number of videos created using your music (the video views do not matter when calculating TikTok royalties).

With Symphonic, we collect your royalties on your behalf and pay them right to you.

How much is a video worth?

It depends….

Videos on TikTok can be 15 or 50 seconds, which affects royalties paid. Additionally, each distributor has their own deal with TikTok that determines how much of the revenue will be paid to their artists for each use in the app. As of June 2019, TikTok pays $0.030 per video created using your music. (That means ten thousand videos created using your music would generate about $300.)

When can you expect these payments from Symphonic?

You can expect these TikTok payments on a monthly basis in line with our monthly schedule.

Can you still receive royalties if you upload your songs directly to TikTok?

No. To collect royalties, the video must use the TikTok snippet of your song that was delivered to the app by your distributor.
