Staring at a pile of raw video clips is usually the exact moment many musicians and creators decide to just skip posting entirely.
To help users push past the friction of content creation, Instagram has introduced First Draft, a new one-tap editing feature designed to automatically trim video clips and stitch them into a cohesive Reel in seconds.
Currently rolling out exclusively for iOS users, First Draft acts as a digital assistant that handles the tedious “rough cut” phase of video editing. An Android version is will likely be releases soon.
What is Instagram First Draft?
First Draft is a native editing tool for Instagram Reels that automatically cuts down selected video clips, removes unnecessary pauses, and pieces together the strongest moments to create an initial video edit.
It primarily uses audio and motion detection to recognize dead air and trims those gaps without relying on generative AI.
How Musicians and Creators Can Use It
The feature is seamlessly integrated directly into the standard Instagram Reels workflow. You can access it in two ways:
- From your camera roll: Open the Reels gallery, select one or multiple clips, and tap the new “First Draft” button at the bottom of your screen.
- Directly in-app: Open the Instagram camera, film your video directly, and tap “First Draft” to have the app immediately tighten up the footage.
The tool adapts to different formats like day-in-the-life vlogs, multi-clip tour montages, and standard talking-head updates.
Every edit made by First Draft is 100% reversible. If you don't like the pacing of the automated cut, you can rearrange, restore, or completely scrap the clips before adding your music, text, or effects in the full editor.

Hypebot's Bottom Line
Short-form video is a non-negotiable pillar of modern music marketing, but for independent musicians managing their own campaigns, editing is a massive bottleneck.
By automating the most frustrating and time-consuming part of video production including cutting out dead air and syncing up basic montages, Instagram is giving artists their time back.
Instagram's First Draft effectively takes the rough-cut busywork off your plate, allowing you to focus on shaping the narrative, engaging your fanbase, and actually making music. If you own an iPhone, this new feature removes the last remaining excuse for not posting that tour vlog or track breakdown.
