Emmy Award-winning comedian John Mulaney has announced MULANEY TAKES MANHATTAN, a nine shows in nine venues in New York City residency engagement running from January 7 through January 15, 2027.
This leg of his JOHN MULANEY: MISTER WHATEVER world tour will feature Mulaney and surprise guests performing at a different New York City live venue each night.
City-Wide Twist on the Modern Residency
The live industry is leaning heavily into residencies. From Harry Styles’ multi-week venue takeovers at NYC's Madison Square Garden and LA's Kia Forum during his Love On Tour, to high-tech, multi-week runs at the Las Vegas Sphere by The Eagles, U2, Phish and others, top-tier acts have prioritized staying anchored in one spot while fans travel to them.
Mulaney’s approach flips that dynamic on its head.
Rather than parking in a single venue for two weeks or forcing fans to travel to a solitary destination, MULANEY TAKES MANHATTAN turns the entire geography of New York City into the residency. Starting at small-capacity clubs and scaling up nightly to an arena, Mulaney is using Manhattan's venue density to build escalating daily momentum within a single city footprint.

This Manhattan experiment follows Mulaney's historic hometown performance in Chicago, where he became the first comedian ever to headline Wrigley Field. That sold-out stadium show featured surprise appearances from David Letterman, Fred Armisen, and Richard Kind, drawing one of the largest live stand-up audiences in history.

A Very Different Approach
Private jets, tricked out tour buses and massive support crews made long national and international tours possible. Taylor Swift's The Eras Tour spanned 149 shows across five continents in less than two years.
More was always better. Miles travelled and shows sold out became a benchmark of success as or arguably even more important as chart positions and stream counts.

This trend started back in 1981 with George Thorogood and The Delaware Destroyers setting the benchmark for touring stamina.
Their 1981 “50/50 Tour” kicked off in Hawaii and Alaska as the blues-rockers tackled 50 U.S. states in 50 consecutive days, completing the lower 48 crammed into a custom-outfitted 1979 Checker Taxi cab.
Often Driving 500 miles a day, they actually overdelivered by squeezing in a double-header in D.C. and Maryland, ultimately grinding out 51 high-energy club shows in just 50 days. Thorogood was simultaneously opening stadium dates for The Rolling Stones at the time, yet famously turned down a coveted slot at Madison Square Garden because his 50/50 dates were already locked in.
This unmatched level of hustle not only cemented the band's reputation as working-class road warriors, but perfectly set the stage for Thorogood to pen his career-defining anthem, "Bad to the Bone," shortly after surviving the historic run.
45 years later, residencies offer a very different approach.
Hypebot’s Bottom Line
As production costs along with attention to personal and mental health rise, musicians are actively experimenting with fresh live formats.
Where Harry Styles anchored to a single room and The Eagles built a bespoke mega-residency at The Sphere, John Mulaney’s city-wide venue crawl offers a masterclass in localized storytelling and artificial scarcity.
'Mulaney Takes Manhattan' spans nine distinct "must-see" events in single market and sets a clever new precedent for how marquee acts can execute urban residencies.
