The journey from small nightclub to Madison Square Garden is the dream of many musicians. Multi-platinum artist Lewis Capaldi made that trip, but see's the path increasingly blocked for the next generation of creators.
On Thursday night, during a sold-out performance at MSG, Capaldi took a moment to look back at where it all began for him: NYC's Rockwood Music Hall.
The legendary Lower East Side venue served as the site of Capaldi’s first-ever U.S. headline show in 2017.

In a powerful move of artist advocacy, Capaldi used his substantial platform to honor the now-closed venue and announce a significant donation to the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA).
NIVA led the Save Our Stages campaign which netted venues, promoters and agents a $15 billion cash lifeline during COVID and continues to advocate for the struggling independent live ecosystem.
"That Journey Doesn't Happen Without Places Like Rockwood"
Capaldi’s tribute included a video reflection on the impact Rockwood had on his trajectory. Despite his current status as a global superstar with the UK’s most-streamed song of all time, he was quick to credit the gatekeepers of the underground.
“I was absolutely gutted when I heard it had closed,” Capaldi told the MSG crowd. “That journey doesn’t happen without places like Rockwood, or the people behind them who take a chance on artists before anyone else will.”
Matt Currie, who booked Capaldi’s first show at Rockwood in 2017, noted that the magic was evident even then. "‘Bruises’ had only been out a few weeks, but you could already feel something special happening," Currie said. "Thank you, Lewis, for... shining a light on the importance of small, independent venues."
A Sobering Reality for the Live Music Ecosystem
While Capaldi’s success story is a testament to the power of the "small stage," many independent venues are facing an existential crisis. Capaldi’s donation comes at a critical time, as the industry grapples with the data from the State of Live Report:
- Profitability Gap: Only 36% of independent venues, festivals, and promoters in the U.S. are profitable.
- Economic Impact: Despite their fragility, these small businesses generate $153.1 billion in total economic output annually.
- Music's Middle Class: As grassroots rooms close, the "ladder" for artist development is losing its bottom rungs, making it harder for emerging talent to build the touring foundations necessary for long-term careers.

Hypebot's Bottom Line
Stephen Parker, Executive Director of NIVA, says that Lewis Capaldi’s leadership sets a vital example for the live music industry.
"When artists reach back to support the rooms that first believed in them, they help ensure those spaces can continue to launch the next generation of talent," Parker stated.
For the music industry at large, this gesture is a reminder that the "live music boom" seen at the shed, stadium and arena level is built upon the foundation of small, independent rooms. Without a healthy grassroots tier, that pipeline is at risk.
