Spotify is taking another calculated step beyond audio by turning its app into a destination for original video content. In an expanded partnership with online music community and database Genius, the streaming giant is bringing two of digital music culture’s biggest video franchises, Open Mic and Verified, directly into its ecosystem.
The move marks the first time Genius’s stripped-down performance series 'Open Mic' will stream on Spotify, while expanding the platform footprint of 'Verified' - the flagship series where creators break down their lyrics and creative process. Executive produced by Genius VP of Music & Content Rob Markman, the two franchises have generated over 3.7 billion views since launching in 2016.
Spotify is also filling a need. Recent data from WhichPodcast showed a massive gap between fan desire to listen to music related podcasts and a severe shortage of music podcasts for them to listen to. Now, the billions of visual impressions for the two Genius podcasts are being funneled through the world's largest subscription audio platform.
How the Integration Spotify Genius Works
Rather than tucking video into hidden menus, Spotify is integrating the shows directly into the listener journey:
- Dedicated Show Pages: Both series now feature dedicated hub pages on Spotify for fans to stream full new episodes alongside curated back catalogs featuring artists like Bebe Rexha, Rod Wave, and Teddy Swims.
- Artist Profile Surfacing: Episodes will automatically pop up as suggested content on relevant artist profiles, catching listeners at the exact moment they are consuming the music.
- Weekly Drop Schedule: New content lands simultaneously on Spotify and Genius each week:
The rollout kicks off with Grammy-winning rapper Rapsody performing "Pick A Side" on Open Mic, while Magnus Ferrell breaks down his single "Asleep Talking" on Verified.
Why Video Inside DSPs Changes the Game
For years, Spotify and other streaming platforms faced a common leak: users discovered music there, but fled to YouTube or TikTok to watch performances, interviews, and take deeper dives. By embedding premium, artist-led video directly alongside audio catalogs, Spotify is keeping that engagement locked inside its own ecosystem.
For artists, this creates a high-leverage narrative layer. Instead of relying on playlist placement to turn passive listeners into active fans, creators can now showcase their personalities, lyrical craft, and live capabilities right on their profile pages.
Hypebot's Bottom Line
Visual storytelling on streaming services has evolved from an added bonus into core infrastructure. Spotify and other DSPs are rapidly consolidating audio and video into a single conversion engine. For independent artists, managers, and labels, release strategies can no longer isolate audio streams from visual assets.
And if anyone's reading this at Spotify or Genius, someone would be wise to extend these formats to other genres.
