SubmitHub is placing a hard limit on highly AI-generated music—and says doing so could eliminate roughly 10% of its current revenue.
Under the platform’s new AI policy, tracks calculated to be at least 85% likely to contain AI-generated audio will no longer qualify for its core music-promotion services. The restriction covers both fully generated recordings and “hybrid” tracks that have undergone some human editing or processing.
This is not a blanket ban on using AI. Music created with AI as one part of a larger human process can still be submitted if it falls below the threshold. SubmitHub’s Hot or Not feature and Meta advertising services are also exempt.
The cutoff will be enforced using SH Labs, SubmitHub’s detection system, which the company says achieved 99.4% accuracy in third-party testing. There will be no appeals process, and writing a song’s lyrics or underlying composition will not exempt a recording if its finished audio crosses the threshold.
SubmitHub says approximately 11% of recently uploaded tracks scored above 85%. Those songs earned an average curator approval rate of 16%, compared with 31% for non-AI music.
The decision partly follows Spotify’s introduction of AI Persona badges. Spotify will exclude labeled AI Personas from editorial and algorithmic recommendations unless a listener already follows them. Spotify stresses that its badge concerns an artist’s public identity, not necessarily how the music was made, but SubmitHub believes heavily generated tracks may still face a promotional disadvantage.
More importantly, SubmitHub is making its own philosophical choice. It does not want human artists competing for curator attention against an unlimited supply of finished songs generated at the press of a button. That makes this more than another disclosure policy. A major independent promotion platform is deciding not only how AI music should be labeled, but whether it should be allowed to purchase access to human-curated attention at all.
