Happy 250 America! US Music Still Dominates at Home, Abroad

As the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary, Spotify dropped a treasure trove of data that shows American music is still a global economic powerhouse.

For U.S. independent artists, songwriters, and domestic labels, it offers confirmation of the power of their music and the potential to capture ears both down the street and across the ocean.

Americans Want American Sounds

While the global numbers are massive, the data shows that your most loyal fanbase is right in your backyard. Demand for domestic talent is staggering, particularly in the heartland.

Americans love listening to American music, and the numbers are striking: 69% of all streams in the country go to American artists, and American music makes up 70% of the Spotify Top 50 chart in the U.S. in 2025. Listeners in the South and Midwest stream the most music made in America: In just the past week, Mississippi topped the list, followed by West Virginia, South Dakota, Alabama, and Louisiana.

If you are touring or targeting digital ads, these regions represent an incredibly receptive, proud audience hungry for homegrown independent music.

Global Payoff

Spotify also announced it paid music rightsholders more than $11 billion in 2025. That's the largest single-year payout from any company in streaming history and much of that went to American based artists

If you are a U.S.-based creator, take note of these two major growth indicators:

  • Royalties have doubled: Total royalties generated by U.S. artists on Spotify have more than doubled since 2019.
  • The export market is booming: Nearly half of those U.S. artist royalties came from listeners outside the United States.

International fans streamed tracks featuring at least one American artist a mind-blowing 776 billion times over the past year. US music still carries an inherent passport: the world wants to hear what it is creating.

Country and Indie Explode Internationally

American music has spent two and a half centuries evolving from roots and blues to hip-hop and rock. Today, international audiences are diving deep into historically regional genres.

If you are making country music, your global runway is clearing fast: Spotify reports that international streams of American country music have grown more than 94% outside the U.S. over the last five years.

Spotify's report also showed that indie music continues to dominate as one of the leading American genres most streamed both domestically and internationally.

Hypebot's Bottom Line

Spotify's "America’s Sound, Heard Around The World" report isn't just a look at back at history. It’s a snapshot of a modern streaming music ecosystem that, while increasingly global, still favors the U.S.

With U.S. domestic regional streaming hitting record highs and international markets craving American sounds, the ceiling for U.S independent music has never been higher.
